Infographic: Oscar’s Acting Nominees — A Timeline Of When They Were Born Posted: 22 Feb 2013 03:45 PM PST As they say, age ain’t nothin’ but a number. (Well, Outkast sang, that, anyway.) But the numbers coming of this year’s Oscar nominees proved to be especially telling — not to mention record-setting — as the AMPAS chose to nominate actors who spanned multiple generations, and even more years between them. Just take a look at Best Actress. Amour’s Emmanuelle Riva — who turns 86 on Sunday — is the oldest woman ever to be nominated in that category, while her competitor, QuvenzhanĂ© Wallis, is the youngest, at age nine. And that’s just a taste of the gap in ages this year. Indeed, this year we have nominees who were born in the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s and beyond, leading all the way up to the early ’00s. (Ugh. We’re getting old.)
For more details on when everyone was actually born, have a look at this handy-dandy infographic, below. |

How Did Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s Moves Turn Into Movie Magic? Posted: 22 Feb 2013 08:21 PM PST Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have danced their way to Academy Award nods for Silver Linings Playbook, but it didn't come without a little help. Choreographer Mandy Moore remembers how their dancing determination may just lead them to the gold… Oscar, that is. "Neither of them were dancers. But it was amazing how open they were and the room was filled with so much energy and lots of hard work," Moore told Celebuzz. Even though Cooper, 37, may have had two left feet in the beginning, he was already planning what professional moves he could use off screen, she said.
"He said, 'I like swing dancing — I can use that in the clubs!'" Moore recalled, laughing. It was Lawrence, 22, who plays a dancer in the Best Picture-nominated drama, who surprisingly needed the boost in self-confidence. "Poor Jen. I think I trained with her every day for six weeks!" Moore said. "Just to get her in shape for what she needed to do. I spent a lot of time with her and it was an intense project. "I remember her saying to me, 'I'm not a dancer and you'll never get me to dance.' But now look at her! "She gave Bradley a run for his money. "She was always determined and was going to get it no matter what. And she kills it in this film. She puts all the emotions on her face and all those things that [her character] Tiffany is supposed to be." And for added inspiration, Moore turned to the classics, of course, like tutorials from the pros in Singing in the Rain. "I was floored when I first saw Jen and Bradley dance on screen. It was magical." Whether or not Cooper or Lawrence, who are both up for Best Actor and Best Actress, take home the statuette on Sunday night, Moore just wants them to show off their newfound moves when they party as a cast. "Whoever comes out winning, I just hope we all get to celebrate together," she said. "All I have to say is enjoy the moment. All the hard work paid off, all the sweating and laughing was worth it." Who do you think will win the Oscar — Bradley or Jennifer? Or both? Let us know what you think is going to happen on Oscar Sunday, below. |
‘Dark Skies’: How Scared Are Critics Of Keri Russell’s Horror Film? Posted: 22 Feb 2013 03:18 PM PST On Friday, February 22nd, Dark Skies hits theaters nationwide, arriving on the heels of three horror-themed projects which did well for themselves at the box office. Although it’s scarcely been two full months since 2013 began, the genre has consistently dominated its competition: Texas Chainsaw 3D, Mama and Warm Bodies all exceeded commercial expectations, if not necessarily critical ones. All of which is perhaps why Dark Skies sneaks into theaters without having been screened for (most) critics. Hoping to conquer the box office in a sneak attack — or possibly to avoid the critical drubbing that horror films often endure — the film arrives with few expectations, although it remains to be seen whether that benefits or harms the film’s financial prospects. Meanwhile, those who have seen it have been decidedly mixed in their reaction. But horror is a genre with a specific sort of appeal, so take these reactions — both positive and negative — with a grain of salt. Here’s a look at what some critics have to say, so far: Joel D. Amos, Moviefanatic.com “Dark Skies is one surprise of an alien invasion movie. The shock and awe slowly boils until the payoff. Writer-director Scott Stewart has painted a picture of modern suburbia that is not only terrifying, but grounded in a reality that makes it all the scarier…” Vanessa Farquharson, The National Post “It will appeal to those who crave sudden shocks and dark hallways and shadowy figures — and will definitely draw some conspiracy theorists to the theatre — but it hardly has any mainstream appeal. Even the scariest of visual effects can't make up for a lack of coherent storytelling…” Sara Stewart, The New York Post "…Dark Skies delivers some genuinely creepy moments, albeit with many a nod to earlier (and superior) scary movies like "Poltergeist." And coming just a week after that freaky Russian meteor crash, when better to indulge in a little alien-abduction paranoia?” Drew Taylor, Indiewire.com “The ultimate alien abduction movie, something that could do for peaceful nighttime slumbers what “Jaws” did for a day at the beach, has yet to be produced and Dark Skies, a new sci-fi horror thingee that grafts the alien abduction theme onto what is essentially a loose remake of “Poltergeist,” certainly attempts such a feat. And it is pretty scary. Unfortunately, all its hard work is undone by a bewilderingly goofy ending that is roughly the cinematic equivalent of an unwanted anal probe… Michael Gingold, Fangoria.com “If Dark Skies ultimately doesn’t explore much fresh territory for its subgenre, it's also better than its unscreened-in-advance status might suggest. The production is slick while remaining grounded in the reality required to center the story, and Stewart and his cast get us to care about the characters even as we feel like we've seen the forces threatening them before. Never mind what's happening in the skies; it's the darkness that descends within the Barretts' household that proves most resonant here…” Have you seen Dark Skies? Do you agree with the critics? RiRi’s Neighbors Tell Singer — We Don’t Want To Live Next To You! Posted: 23 Feb 2013 10:25 AM PST Poor Rihanna can’t catch a break. RiRi’s neighbors in the Pacific Palisades are rallying against her, in the wake of the dramatic arrest of a man who broke into the singer’s $12 million property on Thursday. "We never wanted Rihanna to move here in the first place,” one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told Celebuzz.
According to TMZ, the trespasser was confronted by neighbors who were suspicious of his presence on the property. He was apprehended and held until police arrived on the scene to take him into custody. "It was very scary,” the neighbor added. “Our neighborhood was on lockdown and helicopters were buzzing around and all of a sudden a ton of cops showed up.” Worryingly, law enforcement sources said that the suspect had told police that he’d been emailed instructions on how to get into the home. Rihanna was not home at the time; the “Stay” singer was vacationing in Hawaii with on-again, off-again boyfriend Chris Brown to celebrate her 25th birthday. Added the neighbor: "You know, nobody as ever seen Rihanna at that house. The place has been totally quiet since she bought it – there have been no limos, no parties, absolutely nothing. "Her property is very secure and secluded — it would be very hard for anyone to break into that particular home." Rihanna has had a few other close calls recently. According to TMZ, Zentil Vanzellas spent 277 days in jail after he was convicted of stalking the singer back in 2010. According to court records, the judge deemed Vanzellas a “credible threat” and acknowledged that the 25-year-old had reason to fear him. And in December an unidentified German man got within a few feet of the singer while she was vacationing in her native Barbados. Police later determined that the tourist did not realize he was on the superstar's property. Would you welcome Rihanna into your neighborhood? Tell us what you really think, below.

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 04:04 PM PST Is there a day when Miranda Kerr isn’t in a bikini? (Answer: No, not really.) The Victoria’s Secret model greeted her Twitter followers on Thursday with sexy little surprise when she shared a racy snapshot of her lounging bikini body during her latest photo shoot. In the photo, Kerr, 29, is seen sporting a dark two piece as she romps around in the sand. The Australian beauty wrote alongside the pic:
Kerr also tweeted a behind-the-scenes bikini photo from the same shoot early February, writing, “Straight from the screen #behindthescenes @AlliBoyle chriscolls stylemeromy @miss_anniekelly” However, that wasn’t the first time Kerr stripped down for the camera in recent months. The mom-of-one also flaunted her svelte figure in the latest issue of Victoria’s Secret’s catalog, posing in the brand’s latest line of bridal lingerie. We wonder if that was just a hint of what husband Orlando Bloom saw on his wedding night. |

‘Snitch’: How Much Do Critics Like Dwayne Johnson’s New Crime Thriller? Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:56 PM PST The movie repertoire of Dwayne Johnson is nothing if not a roller coaster of ups and downs. With each good film, there seems to be a smattering of bad films — in the eyes of critics, at least. However, Johnson’s latest movie, Snitch, could be a serious “up” for the actor. Scheduled for release on Friday, February 22nd, the crime-drama revolves around a freight company owner who gets involved in the inner workings of drug cartels in order to save his son from a life in prison. The margin for error in this type of film is colossal: It’s easy for directors and actors in action films to get too trigger happy, so to speak, and overrun the movie with literal action, with no substance to make it mean anything emotionally. Having said that, early reviews of the film are in, and the general critical consensus is that it’s a surprisingly effective showcase for Johnson’s acting chops. Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter “What’s surprising about Snitch is that, rather than taking the reductive path of offering innocuous emotional uplift or one-man-army action, it generates a feeling of real desperation and fear as it shows a man getting in way over his head when he takes on some very bad guys. In other words, this is a pretty good film starring an actor named Dwayne Johnson, not a commodity with The Rock as a hood ornament…” Peter Debruge, Variety “It’s nice to have actors of [Susan] Sarandon and [Barry] Pepper’s caliber onboard for the office-bound wheeler-dealer scenes, but mostly, it’s the prospect of witnessing Johnson at the helm of an 18-wheeler as he rams his way through machine-gun fire that excites…” Richard Roeper, RogerEbert.com “Who would have guessed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would deliver the best work of his career playing a guy who squares off against a pack of small-time street thugs — and winds up face down on the ground, his mug bloodied and his wallet gone…” Chris Knight, The National Post “There isn't much to dislike about Snitch, but it's not the most subtle of movies. [Director, Ric Roman] Waugh uses a trowel to apply his message, when a fine brush would do. But Johnson knows how to radiate charm and integrity, while still managing to be believable in the car-chase shoot-'em-up that is the film's climax…” Lou Lumenick, The New York Post “Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson eschews his usual action heroics until way too late in this weepy melodrama, which begins with his naive teenage son being arrested by the feds after being set up with a delivery of Ecstasy by a pal trying to avoid a drug rap…” Edward Douglas, ComingSoon.net “Snitch offers an incredible human story in following John Matthews’ journey, one filled with tension and drama, and it leaves you thinking in a way we rarely get from typical “action movies” these days…” So, after the review roundup, will you be going to see Snitch? Or are you afraid it will just be another mindless action movie? Sound off below! |
Jennifer Lawrence Like You’ve Never Seen Her Before Posted: 23 Feb 2013 10:25 AM PST Jennifer Lawrence’s love of Dior extends beyond the red carpet. Not only has the Oscar nominee remained loyal to the iconic fashion house’s gowns throughout the award season (despite controversy over an alleged wardrobe malfunction that wasn’t at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year), but now she’s starring in their latest Miss Dior campaign. In the just-released ads shot by Willy Vanderperre, the Hunger Games star channels a ladylike vibe, as she models the brand’s signature chain-handle handbags and accessories.
Lawrence, 22, was first named the face of Miss Dior last October, joining the likes of Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Marion Cotillard, who’ve also appeared in the brands’ campaigns over the years. "Like everyone else, I first discovered Jennifer Lawrence in the roles she played in action movies. I was, of course, struck by her incredible on-screen presence in these blockbuster films, but also impressed by her powerful interpretations of subtler more rounded characters,” Raf Simons, Dior’s head honcho, said of his latest style ambassador. “Her youth and her classic beauty, but also her force of character and the complexity she's capable of embodying at such a young age, are, for me, both unique and very moving." Do you think Lawrence is a perfect fit for Dior? Launch the gallery to see more from the campaign — then tell us what you think in the comments below. |
Watch: Snooki Thinks Anne Hathaway Should Win An Oscar Because She’s ‘A Really Good Prostitute’ Posted: 23 Feb 2013 10:25 AM PST Film critics around the globe have all casted their predictions for Sunday’s Oscars, but what about Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi? As a cinephile, the Snooki & JWoww star told Celebuzz who she thought would be taking home an Academy Award when she stopped by our Hollywood studio this week. For the award for Best Supporting Actress, the 25-year-old predicted that Anne Hathaway – who has already won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award – will take home the Oscar for her role of Fantine in Les Miserable. Why?
“Because she played a prostitute. She’s gorgeous, and she’s a really good prostitute,” she quipped. As for the top prize of Best Picture, Snooki said she wants Ben Affleck and his film, Argo, to win. “I just watched it and I thought it was amazing,” she said. “Plus, I’m a big fan of Ben Affleck and I think he did an amazing job of directing it.” “I thought it was such a good movie. I was tense and on my feet the entire time. I honestly think the award should go to Ben Affleck [and] Argo.” Well, she did say she wanted him to direct her “porno” as well. Watch Snooki predict the rest of the Oscars in the video, above. |
Kim Kardashian: Kanye Isn’t Stopping Me From Signing Autographs! Posted: 23 Feb 2013 10:25 AM PST Kim Kardashian is firing back at rumors that claim her boyfriend, Kanye West, won’t let her sign autographs for fans anymore. In a blog post Friday, the 32-year-old the mom-to-be officially set the record straight, writing, “It's not uncommon for the media to take things you say in an interview out of context, or twist them to make a story more interesting. In a recent interview I was asked what Kanye had taught me that I value the most. I said privacy.”
“I have learned to understand that it's important to have boundaries, especially when we are having a private date night dinner. So if someone came up to the table at dinner, I used to get up, take pics and sign an autograph in the middle of our meal,” she continues. “Now, I know that this time is our private time, and I absolutely will as soon as I'm done eating! It's not that he won't let me sign autographs for my fans… far from it! Just as soon as were done! Totally understandable! I have learned to understand the importance of privacy and boundaries, something that I haven't really learned to embrace before.” |
Look: Katniss And Peeta Strike A Victory Pose Posted: 22 Feb 2013 11:47 PM PST No bow and arrow needed — Katniss Everdeen is already victor. In two new posters for Catching Fire, the much-anticipated sequel to big-screen blockbuster The Hunger Games, the protagonist (Jennifer Lawrence) and her fellow victor, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), are set to embark on their victory tour after together surviving the ever-deadly gladiatorial Games. The franchise’s second installment, a Lionsgate production based on the Suzanne Collins best-selling young adult book trilogy, will show Katniss and Peeta travel through the twelve Districts of Panem, as they strive to carry on their star-crossed lovers storyline under the suspicions of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). While there's decided lack of weaponry or warfare in the promo posters, peace does not prevail in Catching Fire, as it will feature former victors being called back into action for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Quarter Quell. Along with other returning principals Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket), Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy), Lenny Kravtiz (Cinna) and Stanley Tucci (Caesar Flickerman), the Hunger Games sequel added several stars to the ensemble, including Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Clafli, Jeffrey Wright and Jena Malone. Francis Lawrence is directing the sequel, taking the helms from Hunger Games director Gary Ross. Though the film is now in post-production, fans still have many months to wait for Catching Fire: the film will hit theaters Nov. 22, 2013. So now, just slap on your Mockingjay pins and check out the first posters for Hunger Games: Catching Fire, in full size below. Do you think the new images portray Katniss and Peeta well? Weigh in below. |
