Quvenzhané Wallis beasts of the southern wild oscar nomination

Beasts of the Southern Wild star and Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis has just been hired for the title role of Annie, Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment announced on Sunday.

The contemporary remake will be produced and directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits), along with Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and Jay-Z.

"With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star," Hannah Minghella, President of Production at Sony Pictures said in a statement [via Deadline].

"She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can't wait for audiences to further discover her."

The 9-year-old actress could make Oscar history on Sunday; she's up for Best Actress against Emmanuelle Riva, Naomi Watts, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence.

Annie, a longtime Broadway favorite, was adapted into a musical film in 1982, starring Aileen Quinn, Bernadette Peters and Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks. There have been multiple versions since, including TV films in 1995 and 1999.

Smith's daughter Willow was previously considered for the lead role, but eventually grew out of it (she's 12 now).

 

As longtime Jay-Z fans know, the rapper's 1998 album, Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life, features the megahit Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem), which samples the beloved Broadway track.

Wallis's next feature is 12 Years a Slave, co-starring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Benedict Cumberbatch. The Steve McQueen picture has yet to announce a release date.

The new Annie, based on a screenplay written by Emma Thompson, will be arrive in theaters during the winter holiday season in 2014.

‘Identity Thief’ Reclaims Top Spot At Box Office With $14.1M

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman's Identity Thief returned to first place at the box office during Oscars weekend, grossing an estimated $14.1 million. The comedy's grand total since opening two weeks ago now stands at $93.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Newcomer Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, and the animated flick Escape From Planet Earth earned $13 million and $11 million, respectively.

 

Silver Linings Playbook is the only Oscar-nominated film that finished the weekend in the top 10, with $6.1 million in ticket sales.

With its weekend earnings, the David O. Russell picture has officially surpassed the $100 million mark since its wide release in November.

Keri Russell's new horror film Dark Skies opened with a weak $8.9 million. The film couldn't catch up to Safe Haven and last week's box office giant A Good Day to Die Hard to finish in the top five.

With the Oscars happening on Sunday, Kourtney and Kim Take Miami will air a new episode next week. Over the weekend, Kim Kardashian posted a bonus clip from the season on her blog:

Alex Karpovsky Is A Triple Threat

Alex Karpovsky might just be the male version of Lena Dunham, his castmate from HBO’s Girls. The actor has two movies debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival that he co-wrote, directed and starred in, Rubberneck and Red Flag.

In Rubberneck, he plays a technician working in a laboratory who becomes infatuated with a co-worker. His unreciprocated advances become increasingly delusional and dangerous.

"I love slow burning character-driven psychological thrillers," Karpovsky told Celebuzz. "We (co-writer Garth Donovan) read about a real life case in Boston along those lines so we had some fun with it and created a few narrative devices to dramatize the story and got into it.”

"I love stories of unhinged passion, unreciprocated infatuation. There is such fodder for the exploration of damaged psyches, that's what I'm interested in probably more than anything else."

And in case you're wondering, he is definitely not writing from experience.

"Maybe if I did have that," he explained, "I wouldn't be able to deal with it, maybe I'd want some distance from it. The removal allows me to explore it creative ways perhaps."

So does he ever talk shop with Dunham on the set of Girls?

"No, I'm just an actor on the show and I feel like I do my best acting when I keep all my other hats in my closet back in my apartment. I just want to focus on one thing. I don't want to cloud everything up. Also, I know Lena's clearly very busy on-set. I don't want to talk to her about anything else but my job, which is to make sure Ray's engaging.

"It's really fun to play him," he continued. "Lena just writes so clearly, at least for me. I totally get what she wants from Ray. I understand how he reverberates to other members of the group and where he fits into the whole constellation of the Girls universe. I have a little bit of an advantage because I worked with Lena before on her film Tiny Furniture. I feel very comfortable working with her and understand what she wants and am able to make adjustments perhaps before she verbalizes them."

The admiration is clearly mutual. In an interview with The Boston Globe, Dunham said, "I was attracted to his awesome improv ability and unique charm. When Alex and I were making 'Tiny Furniture,’ he felt I was being too easy on him. He did something crazy in a take just to see if I was paying attention and would stop him. I was. I did. And then he trusted me. He's smart and sly and willing to admit to anything. I love his brain."

The actor, who was born to Russian parents, didn't learn English until he entered kindergarten at the age of five. He studied visual ethnography at Oxford University and would like to continue writing, directing and acting.

"If I had my druthers I'd love to keep doing all of them. I feel like if I only did one or two of them I would get anxious. If I only acted sooner or later I'd get an itch and feel like I didn't have enough creative expression of my own, conversely if I only directed I don't think life would be quite as fun."

Girls airs Sundays at 9PM on HBO.

Razzies 2013: Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, ‘Breaking Dawn – Part II’ Sweep

They hate you, they really, really hate you!

Such was the case for Breaking Dawn – Part II at the Razzie Awards on Saturday.

The much-maligned final chapter to the Twilight Saga swept the bulk of the awards, taking home seven awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director (Bill Condon), Worst Supporting Actor (Taylor Lautner, who also won Worst Couple with co-star Mackenzie Foy), Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel Winner 2012 and Worst Ensemble.

Star Kristen Stewart also won for Worst Actress — a prize she shared with her performance in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Meanwhile, Razzie voters officially sunk Rihanna‘s big-screen acting debut by giving her the Worst Supporting Actress award for her performance in Peter Berg’s box-office bomb, Battleship.

The Adam Sandler disaster That’s My Boy took home the night’s remaining awards, for Worst Actor (Sandler) and Worst Screenplay, respectively.

Remarkably, despite a near-sweep of the night, Twilight hasn’t been a big winner at the Razzies in years past. Its only other trophy went to Jackson Rathbone, for his performance in Eclipse.

One Direction have officially kicked off their Take Me Home world tour with the first of a doubleheader in their hometown of London, England.

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik performed at the famous O2 Arenaon Saturday to a sea of screaming fans.

"Aggghhhhh! Lets do this! Cant believe its 1st show day! Cant wait," Horan wrote on Twitter before the show.

 

The world tour, named after the group's second studio album, will take the boys all over the world for more than 100 shows in places like Stockholm, Zurich, Madrid, Nashville, Vancouver and Sydney.

"London you were incredible tonight.. Great start to the tour. Thank you so much for coming to see us. Love you all .xx," Styles wrote on Twitter following the tour opener.

One Direction will play the O2 Arena again on Sunday night before heading over to Glasgow for yet another doubleheader on Feb. 26.

With the 85th Academy Awards taking place today, everyone in Hollywood is making their predictions about who will come out on top this year.

Celebuzz and AJ Hammer of HLN’s Showbiz Tonight are counting down the top five Oscar buzzmakers.

No 5: Jennifer Lawrence – Despite being nominated for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, the actress reveals she is still not really confident about her stardom.

No 4: Hugh Jackman – The first time Best Actor nominee for Les Misérables, calls the honor "beyond the realm of his imagination."

No 3: Bradley Cooper – Another first time Best Actor nominee, the Silver Linings Playbook star claims he is excited about his nomination, but that he is a little starstruck by his fellow nominees.

No 2: Denzel Washington – If Washington, the veteran of this Oscar bunch, wins Best Actor for Flight, it will be his third. The actor states he chose the film because it may be the most complex role of his career.

No 1: Seth MacFarlane – The host of this year's Oscars is setting the bar low for himself so that the only place he can go is up.

5 Ways Steve Jobs Changed Our Lives

Here’s to you, Steve Jobs!

The visionary behind Apple and its incredibly popular devices would have turned 58 this Sunday.  Although Jobs, who could always be seen wearing his signature black turtleneck, died in October 2011, his legacy lives on today.

While many of us grew up hearing stories of the introduction of the telephone, the television, and the Internet, we were lucky enough to experience first-hand the mobile and tech revolution that Jobs created.

Popularizing the concept of the PC in the early ’80s, Jobs introduced future users to the mouse as a means of navigating throughout the screen. Fast-forward almost 20 years, and the late Apple CEO brought the world the iPod, iTunes, the MacBook, the iPhone, and most recently before his death, the iPad. The technology titan changed the way we think, work, and consume and use content — Jobs welcomed us with open arms to the digital age, wow-ing us with one game-changing device after another.

Apple now operates more than 300 retail stores in 11 countries, and the company has sold more than 275 million iPods, 100 million iPhones, and 25 million iPads.  We'd say they're doing pretty fine.

 

Unfortunately, Jobs' death was not unexpected; he had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2003 and had stepped down as Apple's chief executive because he could "no longer meet (his) duties and expectations."

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life," he said in his 2005 Stanford University commencement speech. "Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. … Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”

 

Yet Jobs’ brilliance and energy are still alive today — Apple remains just as detail-oriented when it comes to designing and developing, releasing no new product to the public unless it meets the legacy of Jobs' exacting standards. Not to mention, you’re bound to receive an email with “Sent from my iPhone” at least once a day, and you can definitely always spot someone listening to music through the signature Apple white headphones.

In addition, Hollywood is recognizing Jobs with a movie about his life: it stars Ashton Kutcher and will hit theaters this April.

So to celebrate the man that revolutionized technology, Celebuzz is taking a look back at the devices Jobs created that changed our lives  forever.

The red carpets weren’t always rolling out for this year's batch of Academy Award nominees.

Before the big screen roles, seven-figure salaries and fawning fans, movie stars started out as ordinary people. Sure, after decades in the spotlight, Oscar hopefuls like Robert De Niro, Sally Field, Steven Spielberg and Denzel Washington are some of the most familiar faces in the industry.

But that wasn’t always true.

Before bursting into the spotlight, their now-famous mugs might not have caught so much as a singular glance amongst a crowd on Hollywood Boulevard.

You’ll Never Guess What Johnny Depp Was Doing in Las Vegas

Who would have thought Johnny Depp was such a slave to fashion?

The eccentric actor was spotted browsing the newest wares at renowned tradeshow PROJECT Las Vegas on Wednesday, catching fellow fashion fans by surprise.

 

"I thought it was odd he was there," eyewitness Michele Bedrick with Silver Jeans Co. told Celebuzz exclusively. "He definitely seemed out of place. I wasn't sure quite why he was there or if he had a connection to PROJECT, but I'm sure he could be making personal orders."

As fans certainly know, Depp has a personal style all his own. In fact, the always off-beat dresser was snapped in Vegas wearing brown high-top sneakers, tucked-in baggy jeans and, of course, his signature rocker rings, beaded bracelets and necklaces. Also on display: a floppy hat and blue-tinted sunglasses.

So how did The Lone Ranger star spend his time at the event?

"He was just wandering and cruising up and down the aisles, popping in and out of the tradeshow booths,” Bedrick said. “He was looking at all the products and asking questions."

 

But in true Depp fashion, the shy superstar wasn't looking to attract any attention.

"He seemed like he was trying to keep himself low-key,” Bedrick said. “There were no crowds around him. He was totally under the radar."

After becoming TV history’s youngest executive producer at the age of 24, MacFarlene went on to create The Cleveland Show, American Dad! and write and direct his first feature film, Ted.

Fans and those who hang out in MacFarlene’s inner circle know his irreverent wit, musical abilities (he’s a regular at Los Angeles’ famous Brass Monkey karaoke bar) and impressive pop culture knowledge.

But does he have what it takes to host the Academy Awards Sunday? From a five-word acceptance speech to his dead-on Kermit the Frog impression, relive his top 10 funniest moments and help us decide.

Microphone Fail at the 2012 Emmys: After delivering his presenter’s speech into the wrong microphone during 2012′s Emmy Awards, MacFarlene quickly saved face and improvised a joke about skipping rehearsal, turning what might’ve been ho-hum dialogue to one of the most memorable moments of the ceremony.

White Trash Names: MacFarlene may have miffed a lot of girls when they watched this scene from Ted, but those who have encountered not-so-classy ladies of with these monikers were left giggling in their seats.

2007 Emmys Musical Number: If there’s one thing MacFarlene fans know, it’s that the comedian leaves no stone unturned — or in the case of the 2007 Emmys, no show safe from ridicule. Providing the voices of Family Guy‘s Stewie and Brian, MacFarlene sang about how trashy TV has become during the ceremony’s opening musical number. Let’s just hope the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be able to stomach this kind of humor.

Pizza Salad: If you’ve ever eaten a salad from a pizza place, you’ll get this joke.

Oscars Promo: MacFarlene gave fans a little taste of what’s to come when he starred in this Oscars pormo riffing off of old footage from 1999′s James Bond flick, The World is Not Enough. “You’re gonna have fun.”

Acceptance Speech at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards: Hey, if you can’t laugh at them. Laugh at yourself. And then maybe laugh at them. And then do a Stewie impersonation.
